Hi friends! Hope you all had an amazing weekend. Jeremy and I hung around the house for the majority of the time just relaxing. On Saturday, we hit up a crab feed in town that we always go to every year and got to hang out with some great friends :) it was a lot of fun! I forgot how much I freaking love crab, ha ha. Today I wanted to share with you guys how I weed out my closet. Now, I was going to start this off by saying "with the weather transitioning..." but since we just had a random, crazy, winter storm all across our state, I didn't think that would be exactly appropriate, ha. So instead, I'll just say with March and April just around the corner, its best to go into spring with a cleared out, fresh closet ;)
I'm going to share one trick that I always use that I'm sure most of you have heard of, and then another one that I just recently read about that I thought was pretty cool! A couple of reasons why its good to go through your closet is one, you probably have things you haven't worn in YEARS (seriously, years if you were to really think about some things). Two, you probably have things that are just worn out and have holes that you try and hide, but really you just need to let go and get rid of it. And third, stuff goes out of style! Time to put it behind us.
I will say this. I actually really hate getting rid of clothes. I always think "shoot, what if I need that at some point?!" And then another thing is that I have some pieces that are memories! Like for instance, I have this Abercrombie & Fitch shirt that I have in storage because it was so cute when I used to wear it in JUNIOR HIGH...haha, but I don't want to ever get rid of it! Is that weird and just me, or do you guys do that too? I want to be able to show my kids in the future what I used to wear! I love that my mom has kept pieces like that for us to look at. So I would say if you have something that you would be sad about giving away and want to keep, do it :)
I will ALSO say this. Once I do get rid of the clothes that I don't wear anymore/don't fit and are worn out, I forget about them. I just need to get past the letting go part, and then once I do that I'm good :) I'm laughing to myself a bit right now, because they are just clothes, but I really do love clothes! All of my clothes lovers will understand haha. Those, like my husband, probably won't ;)
And just as a reminder, DONATE! So many people and places are looking for donated clothes. If they are all torn up and stained all over the place, then it's probably best to toss them. If not, definitely donate :) For the pieces that are in good condition but you just don't want/need anymore, there is always Plato's Closet or Poshmark where you can sell some of your stuff :) Make a little extra cash.
Okay! Now for the "How To" part. So the first trick that I am going to share with you guys is called The Hanger Trick. What you do is this. You go through your whole closet and flip all your hangers so the front tip is facing toward you. This is meant to take place for 30 days. I've done it for a little longer, but if after a month you haven't worn something, odds are you won't be wearing it anytime soon. After you wear a piece of clothing, you flip back the hanger, that way you know you've worn it and its here to stay. After the 30 days (or however long you choose) you see what hangers haven't been flipped and you get rid of (donate!) the pieces of clothing you hadn't worn. It's that easy!
Just a side note, for the fancy items you have hanging up or like jackets/sweatshirts and things like that, that are for certain events/weather types it makes sense not to flip the hanger on those. You already know you are going to keep those.
The last trick is one that I recently read about that I thought was cool! I don't know what it is called, so I'm calling it the 4 Piles Trick. What you do is start four different piles of clothes. The first pile are all the clothes in your closet that fit you well, you wear a lot and that you love. Those you automatically keep. The second pile are the clothes that you sort of wear but are torn between getting rid of and keeping. With those, you pack them up in a box and store them in the back of your closet for 30 days. The third pile are clothes that don't fit you anymore, etc. Those are the ones you donate! The fourth pile are clothes that have holes and stains. Those are the ones you toss. NOW, if after the 30 days you haven't gotten anything out of the box, you donate! It's almost the same concept as the Hanger Trick, but slightly different. I feel like with this one, it'd be almost easier to get rid of the clothes, because the ones you pack away, you aren't staring at them every day haha, so you'd be able to forget about them a little easier.
I am heading to Seattle this weekend and doing some shopping, so I am definitely doing one of these tricks. Probably the 4 Piles Trick, that way I can get rid of some clothes faster. Gotta make room for some new fun pieces ;)
Let me know if you try either of these tricks and if they helped you! I'd love to hear about it :)
xo,
